Five establishments in Idukki have been fined a total of Rs 1,08,500 for violating waste-management regulations, including discharging wastewater directly into water bodies. The action follows inspections carried out by the Idukki District Enforcement Squad of the Local Self-Government Department, working in association with the Devikulam grama panchayat.
What the Inspections Found
Ellappetty Tea Factory and Eighth Mile Lifeline Hotel were among the establishments found discharging wastewater into water bodies, and authorities have initiated action against both for the violations. Officials noted that Eighth Mile Lifeline Hotel had previously been fined for a similar violation five months earlier, and that during the latest inspection, the establishment had still not put corrective measures in place.
Part of a Wider Enforcement Pattern in Idukki
This is not an isolated action. A separate joint inspection by the same enforcement squad, together with the Chinnakanal grama panchayat, fined nine establishments a total of Rs 1.78 lakh roughly a week earlier, for discharging untreated wastewater into water sources, burning plastic waste, and dumping plastic and food waste indiscriminately. That inspection covered resorts and shops along Gap Road and in the Anayirankal area, including Misty Munnar, Gap Valley, Misty Cabin, Cloud Dale, Great Escapes Resort and View Munnar Retreat.
Officials have said inspections will be intensified in the coming days, targeting improper waste disposal and water-body pollution across the district, with panchayats tasked with ongoing monitoring of previously flagged establishments to prevent repeat violations.
